Residential tenants moving in and out
Here’s what you need to do to manage your water services when residential tenants move in or out of a property.
Calculate water use during tenancy changes and avoid a special reading charge
If your last meter reading was the 1st of the month and you move out on the 15th, our calculator will help you estimate the cost for those 15 days. The calculator won’t generate a partial invoice, and your billing cycle remains the same.
As the property owner, you’re responsible for the water and wastewater charges incurred at your property. It’s up to you and your tenants to agree on who will pay each part of the bill. This is different from other utilities, like power. You should do a meter reading at the beginning and end of each tenancy; this ensures each person pays only for their usage. It’s a good idea to agree with your tenant on how to do the first and final readings of the water meter. You can choose one of two options: Take a reading yourself or request a special reading.
Take a reading from the water meter yourself
To work out your tenant’s final bill, take a reading from the water meter on the day your tenant moves out. Calculate the amount of water and wastewater used, based on the previous bill (see the reverse of the bill). Once you have your meter reading, contact us on (09) 442 2222, press 2. We can send you an out-of-cycle invoice for a $27.50 service charge.

Request a special meter reading
You can request a meter reader to visit your property. Doing a special meter reading ensures that we know the exact amount of water used so the final bill is accurate. Please note that there’s a fee to cover the reading, invoice and account charges.
