Alternate water sources

Current alternate water sources banner

There are several alternate water sources in use across Auckland – some are used by our commercial customers and others by residential customers.

Many commercial customers use our non-potable sites to access water for non-drinking purposes like construction activity or house cleaning. Did you know, we own and operate tanker filling stations which are used by tanker operators to source bulk supplies of water to supply residential customers who have rain tanks. These sites were particularly busy during the drought of 2020.

When it comes to the use of rain tanks and bores as water sources, regardless of whether you are a commercial or residential customer, you need to notify us when you are using either of these. Often a water meter will need to be installed so that your wastewater discharge is measured accurately.

Rain tanks

Rain tanks

If you rely on a rain tank we recommend installing a meter as it could save you money on your water bill. The meter measures how much water flows into your household. If you use less water, you will also be discharging less wastewater.

Bores

Bores

Residential customers might install a bore for outdoor activities like watering their garden, while commercial customers may set up a bore to lower their water bill. Both need to apply to Council for permission to install a bore, then we need to be notified of its use.

Tanker filling stations for commercial operators

Tanker filling stations

We have twelve filling stations across Auckland where tanker operators can get bulk water.

Non potable water supply

Non-potable water

Non-potable water is available to businesses for construction and other non-drinking purposes.

Standpipes

Standpipes

A standpipe is a portable device used to draw water directly from a fire hydrant on a water main. Hydrants are for firefighting purposes only – any other use is discretionary and limited by us.
