Metropolitan servicing strategy
Auckland is growing and so are its water needs
Upcoming events
Friday 2 - Sunday 4 May, Westfield Albany (centre hours); 10.30am-2.30pm Saturday 3 May, Glenfield Community Centre.

Our city, our water: Let's shape Auckland's water future together
Auckland’s water services are essential to our city’s health, sustainability, resilience and prosperity. Auckland is growing and so are water needs. Climate change, ageing infrastructure, and increasing demand mean we need a smart, sustainable strategy for the future of our water and wastewater services. The decisions we make today will shape our communities for generations - just as past decisions determined where your water comes from and how wastewater is managed today.
The metropolitan servicing strategy – which stretches from Whangaparāoa in the north to Pukekohe in the south – is a 70-year strategy to ensure we can continue to deliver safe, reliable, and affordable water services for everyone. But we can’t do this alone. We need your input to shape the future of water in Auckland.
We want to hear from you
Your feedback will help shape our plans to ensure they align with community aspirations and expectations as much as possible. Get involved by sharing your thoughts and ideas to ensure Auckland’s water future reflects what matters most to you.
Give feedback and you could WIN!
By completing the 5-minute survey between 25 March - 1 June you not only make your voice heard but you go in the draw to win one of three Prezzy cards. Ts and Cs apply - see bottom of page.

Why the servicing strategy mattersEvery time you turn on the tap, shower or flush the toilet you’re using Auckland’s water services. But have you ever thought about what it takes to keep clean water flowing and wastewater safely managed? Here are the reasons why we need to act now.
Auckland is growing
- 700,000 more residents by 2050 means higher demand for water.
Climate change is impacting water supply
- We’ll see more droughts, floods, and unpredictable weather.
Aging infrastructure needs investment
- To keep up, we must upgrade pipes, treatment plants and water sources.
Biosolids (part of wastewater treatment)
- We need to find a new solution for the disposal of biosolids by 2035.
That’s where the servicing strategy is needed to make sure we have a strategy that works for the long term.
Smart investment takes time
Infrastructure is complex and requires long-term planning to balance cost, growth, and sustainability. By planning responsively rather than reactively, we can make informed, future-focused decisions that are adaptable and keep Auckland’s water flowing for generations.

Tell us what matters to youYour feedback will help shape the future of Auckland’s water services. What kind of water future do you want for our city? Should we continue as usual, invest more in innovation or adopt water-sensitive city principles? Each path comes with trade-offs and we want your feedback.
Affordability
- Keep bills low or invest in sustainable technology?
Water sources
- Secure new water supplies now or use what we have more efficiently?
Environment
- Protect rivers and harbours while meeting demand?
We want to understand what matters to you when it comes to the future of water and wastewater services and what trade-offs you are willing to make.
