Groundwater, stormwater and wastewater

Learn the difference between groundwater, stormwater and wastewater and what to do when you have issues relating to them.

Why it’s important to know the difference

While we manage water leaks and wastewater issues on public land, we don’t manage stormwater or groundwater.

If you can identify what type of water you’re dealing with before you contact us, it helps us to prioritise the right jobs to help Auckland.

Did you know?

More than 10 per cent of our callouts are “non-jobs”. Knowing the difference between groundwater, stormwater and wastewater can help us reduce that number.

Groundwater

Groundwater is rainwater that has soaked into the ground. It resurfaces when the ground becomes saturated and can look orange or oily. It normally disappears when the ground dries.

You don’t need to contact us about groundwater.

Stormwater

Stormwater is runoff from rain. It absorbs into the ground or flows into drains managed by Auckland Council. When it can’t drain away, it can puddle or flood.

Stormwater on private land

This is normally the owner’s responsibility. Call a plumber or drainlayer for advice.

Stormwater on public land

If you’re concerned about stormwater affecting public assets like drains, ponds, wetlands or roads, call Auckland Council on 09 301 0101.

Water leaks

If clear water is leaking or gushing from an unknown source, it’s likely a water leak.

Water leaks on private land

If you’re a property owner, you’re responsible for any leaks between the water meter and your house or building. Call a plumber or drainlayer for advice.

Water leaks on public land

  • If you see a leak on public land like a footpath, berm or street, please contact us.
  • Take photos first! Before you report an issue, take some photos. Sharing photos helps us understand the problem better.

Wastewater (sewage)

If grey or dirty water is leaking or gushing from an unknown source, it’s likely wastewater.

Wastewater on private land

If you have a blocked drain or wastewater (sewage) overflow, call us before you call a plumber. We’ll look at what’s going on and let you know if the cause is the public pipe or your drain. Remember to take photos so we can understand the problem better.

Wastewater leaks (overflows) on public land

Please contact us if you see any suspected wastewater overflow on public land. Remember to take photos so we can understand the problem better.

Manholes

There are two types of manholes:

  • Auckland Council manages stormwater manholes
  • We manage wastewater (sewage) manholes. Most are located on public land, but some can be found on private land too.

Leaking or overflowing manhole

If you see any type of manhole leaking or overflowing, you can report it to us.
